Hepatitis B Testing and Vaccination in Immigrants Attending ESL Classes in British Columbia
نویسندگان
چکیده
Hepatitis B virus (HBV) infection is highly endemic in most Asian countries (Nguyen and Keeffe, 2003) and between 30% and 50% of Chinese immigrants to North America show serologic evidence of past HBV infection (Walker and Jaranson, 1999; Merican et al., 2000). In 2004, approximately 250,000 persons in Canada were infected with HBV, 70% being immigrants (Sherman et al., 2004). Immigrants from countries with high HBV prevalence and low levels of HBV vaccination have an excess risk of liver disease (Di Bisceglie et al., 1988; Hwang et al., 1996; London and McGlynn, 1996; Euler, 1997; Merican et al., 2000; Jenkins et al., 2001). In fact, 80% of liver cancer among Asians in the United States (US) was associated with HBV infection (London and McGlynn, 1996; Johnson, 1996).

Hepatitis B knowledge, testing and vaccination levels in Chinese immigrants to British Columbia, Canada.
BACKGROUND Little is known about hepatitis B (HBV) and liver cancer control in Chinese in Canada. Liver cancer, a significant health problem in Asia, is preventable and can be controlled through HBV blood testing, vaccination, and community education about HBV. OBJECTIVE The overall goal was to increase HBV testing and vaccination in Chinese adult Canadians. The objective was to present findi...
متن کاملEvaluation of a hepatitis B educational ESL curriculum for Chinese immigrants.
OBJECTIVES According to recent census data, 1,216,600 Canadians are of Chinese descent, and over 80% of Chinese Canadians are foreign born. Approximately 10% of Chinese immigrants are chronic carriers of hepatitis B, compared with less than 0.5% of the general population. English as a second language (ESL) classes provide ready access for individuals with limited English proficiency who are not...
متن کاملFeasibility and Acceptability of an English-as-a-Second Language Curriculum on Hepatitis B for Older Chinese American Immigrants.
Asian immigrants to the U.S. have an increased prevalence of hepatitis B virus (HBV) infection compared to native born individuals; an estimated 10 percent of Chinese immigrants are infected with HBV. Using qualitative data from focus groups, we developed an English-as-a-Second Language (ESL) curriculum that aimed to improve knowledge about key hepatitis B facts. The curriculum was pilot-tested...
متن کاملImpact of universal preadolescent vaccination against hepatitis B on antenatal seroprevalence of hepatitis B markers in British Columbia women.
Countries with a low risk of hepatitis B (HB) lack data on the effectiveness of universal HB vaccination programs for children. British Columbia began a program in 1992, offering HB vaccination to 11 year olds. We conducted an anonymous, unlinked serologic survey 7 years later, analyzing a random sample of specimens (n = 1215) from women aged 15-44 years who had undergone antenatal rubella test...
متن کاملDevelopment of Palladium-Alloy Membranes for Hydrogen Separation and Purification
This paper summarizes R&D activities and progress at NORAM Engineering and the University of British Columbia (UBC) on preparation and testing of thin palladium-based membranes and their applications. Most of these activities were carried out internally at NORAM, some jointly with UBC and their spin-off company, Membrane Reactor Technology (MRT) through a wide range of projects. Key results out...
